2019年2月より、ピクサーの新プログラム「SparkShorts」がスタートしています。まずは3本の作品が登場し、今後は2019年末に開始されるストリーミングサービス「Disney+」にて継続して公開が行われる予定です。
今回公開されたのは毛糸のキャラクターが登場する「Purl」、ロボットが主人公の「Smash and Grab」、そして犬と猫の友情を描いた「Kitbull」の三本です。それぞれ本編に加え、製作の背景、監督のインタビューの動画も公開されています。

このプログラムは、ピクサーの若手育成を狙ったものと思われます。昔のピクサー短編はまさに技術のテストベッドとともに、次第に人材を発掘するためのものに変わってきたわけですが、徐々にDVD販促の続編ものがふえ、やや渋い出来かな？と思ってたところ。
狙いとして「私たちの通常の制作費よりも小規模で、個々のアーティストの可能性と独創的な映画制作のアプローチを発掘すること」が挙げられていて、これはちょっと期待ですね。今回の三作品、皆さんの感想はいかがでしょうか。Purlなんて現代だからこそでてきた題材だなー、と思いました。今後が楽しみです。
