2019年2月15日、ディズニーに関するアイテムを記録、保管する「ディズニー・アーカイブス」を設立した、デイヴ・スミス氏が逝去されました。2007年にはディズニー・レジェンドとして選出され、広義のディズニーである映画、テレビ、テーマパーク、その他あらゆるディズニーに関する宝物を収集、整理した方です。その結果はデイヴ・スミス氏が監修した「Disney A to Z」にもまとめられ、現在第5版が発行されています（日本版は第3.5版）。

ということで、先ほどやっと届きました。届いて5分でレビューなので詳細までは追えてませんがファーストインプレッションを。まず最初に手に取ってわかるのは「薄い」。これは本家が2カラム、日本語版が3カラム構成になっていることが原因。

デイヴ・スミス氏は多くの本において「Ask Dave」というコラムで、ディズニーファンからの質問、疑問に答えるということもしていました。講談社のディズニーファン誌でも登場していたので、デイヴ・スミス氏の名前を知っている人も多いでしょう。

デイヴ・スミス氏は1970年からウォルト・ディズニー・カンパニーに従事しており、ウォルトの甥であるロイ・O・ディズニーから資料の整理を命じられ、それが後のアーカイブスにつながっています。映画「トゥモローランド」の初期映像では「ディズニー・アーカイブスから発見されたウォルトに関する謎の箱」がストーリーのきっかけになっていたりしてたりしました（おそらくD23 Expoでのみの上映でしたが）。

個人的にもディズニー史において、ウォルトの死後に登場した方の中でも非常に重要な存在だと思っていました。特にアーカイブスということでファンに非常に近い位置にいる方で、なんとも悲しいことに思えます。

その功績に関しては、日本でも「ウォルト・ディズニー・アーカイブス展」などで身近に感じられるはず。まだ国内を巡回しているので、ぜひチェックを。
